Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is considered as the second most popular and internationally known carnivals, after the one held in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.
This festival is famous all over the world for its popular and amazing flavor. For two weeks, the city streets come alive with freedom and extravagance.
The carnival has a different theme each year. The theme for the carnival is usually chosen by an online poll on its official website.
The event to elect the Carnival Queen is one of the carnival’s main and the most popular events. It is held on the Wednesday of the first week of festivities.
The candidates of this amazing and spectacular competition parade in all their glamorous finery on a 1.200 m2 stage wearing amazing costumes.
This carnival is the most popular festivity in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. In 1987, it entered the Guinness World Record Book as the largest gathering of people in an outdoor plaza to attend a concert – more than 200.000 people.
Once the carnival queen is elected, the parade announcing the start of the Carnival takes place on a Friday, where thousands of people fill the streets for hours!

- The Opening (Announcement) Parade – The Announcement Parade marks the beginning of the Carnival. It is a spectacular multi-colored spectacle where thousands of people march for hours along the main streets of the city.
- Burial of the Sardine (Entierro de la Sardina) – In Spanish culture, the Burial of the Sardine is a celebration that marks the end of the carnival. It consists of a large parade and culminates with the burning of a symbolic figure. It is a wonderful time for religious and spiritual reflection.
- Daytime Carnivals – During the Carnival of Santa Cruz, there are also daytime dances and live performances all around the city. People of all ages and families enjoy a costume dance party. Thousands of people attend these daytime activities each year.
