The Bristol International Balloon Fiesta is the largest annual meeting of hot air balloons in Europe. The festival attracts over 130 hot air balloons from all around the world.

The event is held annually in Bristol, UK and it’s an absolutely amazing sight where hundreds of hot air balloons take to the skies of the city and put on night shows called “night glows”.

Entry to the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta is completely free of charge but in order to have a guaranteed parking space, you would need to book it in advance.

The hot air ballooning is a weather dependent events. It depends on low wind, clear skies and little or no rain. The balloons traditionally ascend at 6 AM and it’s completely worth getting up this early.

The event was first held in 1979 and today it is the largest of it’s kind in Europe. This event attracts of over 100,000 people on each of the four days of the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta.

Throughout the event, there is a fun fayre and daily events which includes paragliding and other air-based events.

Ashton Court Bristol
The event takes place in a large country estate Ashton Court where mass launches are made twice a day – at 6 AM and 6 PM, depending on weather conditions. The property is owned by the City of Bristol.

Alongside the amazing and unique sight of hot air balloons filling the skies, visitors can also expect a large number of trade and food stands, fairground rides and entertainment events.

Night Glow Bristol
One of the most popular attractions during the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta is the “night glow” event. This is the event which happens on Thursday and Saturday evenings, where balloons are inflated and glow to music after dark, followed by a spectacular fireworks display.

During the Night Glow event, the balloons are set up at sunset and are inflated as if they are going to take off – but instead of being allowed to ascend, they are held down by the ground crew.

The Night Glow event traditionally occurs in the dark, the balloons glow like huge light bulbs, which gives out a spectacular display for the audience below.

Previously, the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta used to be held in the second week of September, but due to muddy visitors and bad weather, it has been moved in the start of August. However, cancelations are normal due to high winds mostly.
