The Carnival of Venice (Carnevale di Venezia) is one of the oldest festivals held in Venice, Italy. The festival is world famous for its amazing and unique masks that people wear during this event.

The Venice Carnival History

Apparently, the Venice Festival started in the year 1162 and it became official in the Renaissance period. During the 17th century, the baroque carnival was a way to save the glorious image of Venice worldwide.

However, under the rule of the King of Austria, the Venice Carnival was outlawed completely and the use of masks became strictly forbidden during that time.

After a long absence (more than 180 years), the Carnival of Venice returned in 1979 when the Italian government decided to bring back the history and culture of Venice by allowing and officially recognizing this traditional Carnival.

Venetian Carnival Masks

The Venetian Carnival is most famous for its distinctive masks and costumes. It is common for people to attend the Carnival wearing elaborate costumes and masks.

One of the most important events during the Venice Carnival is the contest for the most beautiful mask (la maschera piΓΉ bella), which is judged by international costume and fashion designers.

There are several different styles of masks that are worn during the Venice Carnival. Usually, people with different occupations and jobs wear a different type of Carnival masks during the festival.

Bauta Venetian Mask
Bauta Mask: In the 18th century, the Bauta become a standardized society mask regulated by the Venetian government. It was obligatory to wear it at certain political events during that time. This mask was usually worn by men.

Colombina Mask Venice Festival
Colombina Mask: It is actually a half-mask which covers the eyes, nose, and upper cheeks. It is often decorated with gold and silver. It is said it was designed for an actress because she did not wish to have her beautiful face covered completely. However, the Colombina is a modern creation as there are no historic paintings depicting its use.

Plague Doctor Mask
The Plague Doctor Mask: (Medico della peste) is one of the most bizarre and recognizable of the Venetian masks. It did not start out as carnival mask at all but as a method of preventing the spread of disease. Those who wear this mask often also wear the associated clothing.

Venetian masks can be made of leather, porcelain or using the original glass technique. Today, most Italian masks are made with gold leaves and are hand-painted using natural feathers and gems for decoration.
