Sarajevo Film Festival is one of the most respected and the largest film festivals in Europe. It was started in 1995 during the siege of Sarajevo and military aggression of Yugoslavia on Bosnia and Herzegovina.

From that period, the SFF welcome domestic and international actors and filmmakers to Sarajevo. Modern Sarajevo Film Festival attracts more than 100.000 people each year on its projections from more than 60 countries worldwide.

Sarajevo Film Festival 2019

SFF is the international film festival with the main focus on south-eastern Europe productions (Albania, Austria, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Hungary, Kosovo, Macedonia, Malta, Moldova, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, and Turkey).

Most projections are held in the National Theatre, the location of the film festival red carpet and main location in the heart of the Sarajevo.

The Sarajevo Festival was host to some of the most popular persons today, such as Robert De Niro, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Orlando Bloom, Daniel Craig, John Malkovich, Morgan Freeman, Steve Buscemi, Bono Vox, Mickey Rourke, Michael Moore, Gerard Depardieu, Gillian Anderson, Kevin Spacey and many others.

SFF Red Carpet
Danis Tanović’s No Man’s Land was the winner of the Sarajevo Film Festival in 2001 and also won an Oscar in the US same year as the best foreign movie. The Best Movie Award of SFF was named “The Heart of Sarajevo”.

Festival Programmes

The SFF has several programmes during the festival, such as:

  • Competition – Official competition for most movie projections,
  • Talents Sarajevo – Program designed to promote young talents from the region,
  • Open Air – Watch movies on several open-air locations in city,
  • European Shorts – Featuring short movies from Europe,
  • BH Film – Promoting domestic cinematography.

There are other programs such as CineLink Industry Days, In Focus, Tribute to, Summer Screen projections, Children and teen programs, Dealing with the past and human rights day as well.

The Heart of Sarajevo

This was the official award since 2004, the 10th anniversary of the Sarajevo Film Festival. Its shape has been in informal circulation since the very beginning of the festival.

The Heart of Sarajevo
The Heart of Sarajevo was designed by French fashion designer Agnès Andrée Marguerite Troublé, a friend and patron of the Sarajevo Film Festival.

The Heart of Sarajevo is awarded for the best feature film, best actress and actor and best short and documentary film during the festival.
